How to use this tool:

1. Wait until your pet is completely asleep or resting quietly in a calm room.
2. Count their breathing by watching their chest rise and fall. One full rise and fall equals exactly one single breath.
3. Type the number of breaths you counted into the first box, select how many seconds you timed them for, and select their size and age group.

• Under 30 Breaths Per Minute (Normal / Healthy): A normal resting or sleeping respiratory rate for the vast majority of healthy dogs. Your pet’s lungs and heart are functioning comfortably.
• 30 to 40 Breaths Per Minute (Caution / Elevated): An elevated breathing rate that warrants closer monitoring. If your pet just finished running or playing, track them again in one hour once they are completely cool. If the rate stays in this range while asleep, notify your veterinarian.
• Over 40 Breaths Per Minute (Danger / Warning Zone): An abnormally fast resting respiratory rate. A consistent sleeping rate above 40 breaths per minute is a primary indicator of fluid buildup in the lungs or early congestive heart failure. Schedule an urgent clinical veterinary evaluation immediately.
